Allama Iqbal International Airport, Lahore

Airside Systems Upgrade

Allama Iqbal International Airport, Lahore (AIIAP) was upgraded from a CAT-II airfield to CAT-IIIB due to adverse weather conditions caused by heavy fog during the months of November to January. Prior to the upgrade, flights would routinely be delayed, diverted, or cancelled. These conditions resulted in financial losses for the airlines, airport and affiliated service providers, and a major inconvenience for passengers. IEC installed the latest CAT-IIIB airfield lighting, A-VDGS, ILCMS, Surface Movement Radar and MLATs solution from ADB SAFEGATE to ensure smooth guidance from landing to docking. This was the first successfully installed CAT-IIIB system in Pakistan. With the new system in place, AIIAP was able to increase its flight operation capacity from 5 to 29 flights per hour, reduced delays and diversions due to inclement weather and accept flights from nearby airports in low visibility scenarios. IEC’s technical and project execution capabilities were recognized by both Civil Aviation Authority and ADB SAFEGATE as exemplary.

Quetta International Airport

Extension & Upgradation of Terminal Building & Aircraft Stand Equipment

As part of a larger strategy, CAA decided to undergo a major expansion and upgradation of Quetta International Airport (QIAP), the largest airport of Baluchistan province, due to its importance in the region.

The project was executed in phases, with focus on extending the capability of the airport by adding 2 new passenger boarding bridges and allied parking stand equipment in the first phase. This included A-VDGS (Advanced Visual Docking Guidance System), 400 Hz ground power units and underground aircraft power supply pits at both domestic and international stands.

The scope of the next phase, currently being executed by IEC, is rehabilitation of the 20-year-old runway and replacement of the existing halogen lights with LED lights, signs and advanced computerized airfield lighting control &monitoring systems. The complete system is backed by no-break diesel driven uninterrupted power system as recommended by ICAO.

Jinnah International Airport, Karachi

Upgradation of Multiple Airside Systems

In 2007, Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) strategized the expansion and upgradation of various systems at Jinnah International Airport, Karachi(JIAP). IEC commissioned the first of its kind, Hatch and Pop-Up type underground power pits, with Plug & Play type Solid State Ground Power Units and Advanced Visual Docking Guidance Systems (A-VDGS) at this major airport in Pakistan. Prior to this system, the airport authority used AGNIS/PAPA system for Pilot Guidance, a system no longer recommended by ICAO.

This project was executed in phases and included the dismantling and reconstruction of taxiways and aircraft waiting areas at the secondary runway. This involved replacing the existing halogen-based airfield lights to more energy efficient LED based airfield lighting system.

The successful execution of these projects was so monumental for CAA that it decided to upgrade all major airports to the A-VDGS system and LED based lights thereafter.
